Event Details

The Women’s Film Festival (TWFF) is celebrating its 7th
anniversary with an exciting lineup of films and events August
18-28, 2022. The mission
of
The Women’s Film Festival is to inspire filmmakers and support the efforts of
women in the film and entertainment industry. This year we are excited to do that by
choosing
“The Justice of Bunny King” as our opening night film. Essie Davis (THE
BABADOOK
), plays Bunny King, a headstrong woman in a face off with social services
for custody of her children. In a race against the clock and headed towards an epic
showdown with the authorities, Bunny uses her razor-sharp wit and charm, an
abundance of street smarts, and some quirky help to try to win back the custody of her
children. The film also stars
Thomasin McKenzie (Film Independent Spirit Award
nominee, LEAVE NO TRACE, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO
), as her troubled niece. This
moving and heartwarming film from New Zealand has been described as an “Angry,
funny, and deeply loveable gem of a movie”.
Opening night is 7pm, August 18th at
the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, 480 South Broad Street. Tickets can be purchased
through the TWFF website: www.
thewomensfilmfestival.org

The festival will screen several feature films from around the globe. Among the feature
films we are excited about is our closing night comedy-drama,
“Sweet Disaster”. The film tells the story of Frida, a 40-year-old painting therapist, who thinks she’s found
love at an airport bar until the object of her affection abruptly leaves her for his ex. She
tries to find out why with the help of the angsty, teenage tech-whiz next door. SWEET
DISASTER provides a unique picture of life changing lanes and the unexpected places
we find love, support, and a new perspective. And, it’s a German film so it of course
contains a guest appearance by David Hasselhoff.

The festival includes several powerful feature documentaries, including “Prognosis” a
feature documentary about the Oscar-winning documentarian and LGBTQ activist
Debra Chasnoff and her battle with cancer. Chasnoff’s groundbreaking film, “It’s
Elementary”
provided a blueprint for the best way to actually “Say Gay” in schools.

“Fair Play” takes a deep look at domestic inequity, making visible the invisible care
work historically held by women. The film inspires a more balanced and equitable
future. Produced by Reese Witherspoon and directed by
Jennifer Siebel Newsom who
also wrote, directed, and produced the 2011 award-winning documentary “
Miss
Representation”
and also happens to be the “First Partner” of the State of California
(she eschews the term First Lady).
“Ahead of the Curve” in another feature
documentary which puts a spotlight on the story and impact of Curve Magazine. The
film features
Melissa Etheridge, Lea DeLaria, and two well known Philadelphians, poet
Denice Froham and activist and speaker Amber Hikes, who will be in attendance for
a Q&A after the film.

Feeling racy? “Women in Front” features women who got tired of the back seat of the
Harley and are hitting the open road holding the handlebars. All washed up?
“Erzulie”
is a revenging mermaid film. Still a Revolutionary” is the story behind one of the
greatest minds of our time, Albert Einstein and shares the humor behind the head. “
The
Last Battlefront”
takes us behind the lines of the fight to get DC declared our 51st
state and the racism that’s kept those living in our seat of politics out of the voting booth
for so many years.

In addition, we boast over 10 full programs of short films including several award
winners
, our popular animated program, as well as the always sold out “Home Grown”
program where we shine the spotlight on Philly’s community of filmmakers
. Some short
film highlights include

It is imperative for women to see our stories told and to be in positions of power in the
film industry if we are to gain parity. In addition to the film festival, we run workshops
and events throughout the year, but the festival is the centerpiece of what we do.

We are looking forward to celebrating our 7th year and hope you will join us!
