I hope this email finds you well! My name is Darien Woodard and I am the casting director for the upcoming film Della Can Fly. We are looking for actors who would be interested in auditioning for several roles in the upcoming short film, “Della Can Fly” directed by Jasmine Lynea.
We are aiming to shoot mid-November for two days. We are asking for full day availability for both days. Meals will be provided. Please keep in mind that there will be rehearsals before shooting. All filming is set to take place in Philadelphia. Pay rates will be discussed upon casting.
Story synopsis: Della Can Fly! is a short sci-fi fantasy film, set in 2000 in West Philadelphia. With the help of his technologically advanced great-niece, a desperate old man proves a generational family myth to be true. Nostalgic and rooted in the importance of family preservation, the film explores and conceptualizes Virginia Hamilton’s black folklore, The People Can Fly!
Roles:
Uncle Charlie (PRINCIPAL): (Black, Male, 75-80) a black 80 something, eclectic out of touch funkadelic wizard. Lived as a painter during the birth of afrofuturism and has not escaped his beliefs. A modern day George Clinton looks alike, he is an obsessive family archivist that deeply believes his sister can fly.
Amala (PRINCIPAL): (Black, Female, 8-10) A curious young black girl with a hearing aid. She is visiting for her late grandfather’s funeral and feels like an outcast to her unwelcoming cousins.
Kevin: (Black, Male, early 50s) Older brother to Caleb and father to Amala. Quirky and obsessively creative aspiring toy inventor. Living far from where he grew up, he is more of a visitor with no authority or say. Believes in the impossible but is too afraid to announce his declaration. Everything left unsaid is cerebral and adapted through his inventions.
Uncle Caleb: (Black, Male, late 40s) Younger brother to Kevin and Uncle to Amala. Always looking for the easy way out. He is a father of three, expected to be called the man of the house with no steady income. Appears like he has it all together but he only pretends so he isn’t perceived as weak. Since his fathers passing, he is left responsible to take care of Uncle Caleb. Reluctant and money driven, he tries to bully his older brother to sell the house and place Uncle Charlie into a mental institution.
Della: (Black, Female, V.O.) Stardust. Lives in the world she created. Speaks a foreign language to her brother still living on earth.
