Simmer is a short film about a young boy’s poem; a reflection of his tormented soul. It will be my senior thesis at Temple University. The story involves a day in the life of Carter Williams and his desire to express himself. He is presented with an opportunity to perform at a poetry showcase in his region but must first confront his own insecurities and strained relationship with his father. This is a story of freedom, self-definition, and transformation.

Carter Williams (Male, 18-21, African-American)
LEAD: A quiet and controlled young high school student. Lacking the tools he needs to communicate, he finds himself unable to truly express the pent-up emotions within him. Confused and needing direction, closed-off, quietly passionate. Must be okay with physical stunts. Should look young.

Veronica Peters (Female, 20-25, African-American)
SUPPORTING: An open and perceptive English teacher. Tries to be there for her students. Carter’s lifeline and confidant. Probing, thoughtful, empathetic.

Anthony Parks (Male, 18-21, Caucasian)
SUPPORTING: Carter’s classmate and one of the story’s antagonist. Willful, coy, egotistical. Always looking to throw his weight around. Should look young. Must be okay with physical stunts.

Richard Williams (Male, late 30s, African-American)
SUPPORTING: A cold and dispassionate father. Stressed by the anxieties and commitments of a single working parent. Unable to properly communicate with his son. Focused, emotionally unavailable.
