| Job Description: | Beacon Theatre Productions is a theatre company in Philadelphia with an annual prize for a local playwright (screenwriters and screenplays are eligible) for a new, never-produced script that is about a moment of history, and connects to a social issue of today.
The winning writer will get $300 and a staged reading of their full-length script in 2026. Deadline: Dec. 1st, 2025 for the full-length call. Read on for more information. The chosen playwright will get $300 and the opportunity to see a staged reading of their play in spring 2026. We are seeking new full-length plays/screenplays: -that are between 50 – 90 pages/minutes that can be performed with six actors or less (doubling allowed) -that spotlight a critical moment of the past (connection to a real event or person). -that show the way to a better future (directly or indirectly. For example: a post-show talkback on the play’s content could connect to a current social issue) -that are the entrant’s own original work, not generated with AI, and must not violate the intellectual property rights of any third party -that spotlight (or screenwriters identify as) social justice advocates, activists, and/or BIPOC individuals -that have not been produced (or has a reason it would benefit from a staged reading for future development) -that are written by writers from the Greater Philadelphia area.
