Eunice Levis is a first-generation Dominican-American, born and raised in the Bronx, New York, currently based in Philadelphia. She is currently developing several projects that combine her love of horror, sci-fi, thriller, and fantasy, many through a diasporic lens. Her work seeks to disrupt and challenge dominant narratives around technology, gender, history, and diaspora identity by shifting the stories we tell about them. Her latest short film, Ro & the Stardust, about a free-spirited teen and her terminally ill grandmother who build a rocket ship, was part of the 2021 NALIP Latino Lens Women of Color Short Film Incubator, sponsored by Netflix.
Her previous short film, InVade, about an undocumented scientist and his son who try to stop an environmental disaster, won a $20,000 production grant from the Independent Public Media Foundation and made the second-round of the 2020 Sundance Episodic Lab with its pilot script. The grant was awarded at the tail end of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic had shut down the country, unemployment was at an all-time high and many in the creative community were struggling to make ends meet. Following all SAG, State and COVID prevention guidelines, Eunice and her production team decided to move forward with the filming of InVade in order to support the independent creative community. The production employed and utilized over 60 Greater Philadelphia region independent creatives and businesses to fulfill production needs.
After InVade, Eunice went on to produce the short film version of her urban gothic horror feature script Keep. Many crew members who were employed during the production of InVade also worked on Keep. Keep made the second-round consideration for the 2021 Sundance Feature Development program.
Next, Eunice wrote and directed a folklore horror micro short titled Fell Ends which was an extraordinary selection at NYX’s 13 minutes of horror film festival and streamed on Shudder.
In addition to writing and directing, Eunice cohosts Café Negro con Genre (with fellow Philadelphia filmmaker Les Rivera), a monthly podcast that promotes Latine/o/x creatives working in the genre space. She also serves as filmmaking mentor at the Craft Institute.
Eunice is represented by 3 Arts Entertainment.
