DESCRIPTION:It’s your chance to be a part of FirstGlance\, Philadelphia’s independent film festival since 1996! \nThe 29th Annual FirstGlance Film Festival\, Philadelphia’s longest-running competitive indie film festival where audiences vote for “Best of the Fest\,” returns to the Film Society Bourse\, 400 Ranstead Street\, Philadelphia\, Pa.\, Friday\, May 8\, 2026\, through Sunday\, May 10\, 2026. \nThe curated lineup of genre-spanning films features more than 40 new independent projects by professional\, emerging\, and student filmmakers from around the world comprising three features\, six documentaries\, twenty-four shorts\, four animated shorts\, and four student films. Thirty-four films are Philadelphia Premieres. Films will compete in more than 20 nominating categories and for Audience Choice Awards. \nWith everything from horror to thrillers and comedy to drama\, plus examinations of newsworthy topics and social issues\, there’s something for everyone. DESCRIPTION:Join Scribe for two rare films by Bill Stephens and the People’s Communication Network that center Black liberation. \nCongo Oyé (US\, 1971\, 45 min) \nA rare and seldom-seen work\, made by Bill Stephens in collaboration with Chris Marker\, Eldridge Cleaver\, and Kathleen Cleaver. Congo Oyé was never completed and long believed lost until it was recently unearthed on video cassette from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The film follows an exploratory visit to Africa’s first People’s Republic\, declared by President Marien Ngouabi. \nPreceded by: \nQueen Mother Moore Speech at Greenhaven Prison (US\, 1973\, 17 min) \nTwo years after the riots and deaths at Attica\, New York\, a community day was organized at Greenhaven\, a federal prison in Connecticut. Think Tank\, a prisoners’ group\, coordinated efforts with African-American community members outside the prison walls to fight racism and poverty. The event was documented by People’s Communication Network\, a community video group founded by Bill Stephens\, for cablecast in New York City\, marking the first time an alternative video collective was allowed to document an event inside prison walls. \nBill Stephens founded the People’s Communication Network\, a community video group that produced videos for public access.
